Last Few Summer on the Squares

Thomas Beckett your on-the-prowl ghost cat here. The Inn of the Six-Toed Cat has really been feeling the lazy days of summer. Tomorrow brings Summer on the Square in Corydon, IA. There are 3 more left – July 7, 14 and 21. If you don't know, this is a free concert series not to be missed. What with food, music, people selling home-grown produce and did i forget my favorite part?....Dessert! I think I am definitely going to have to check this out followed by the Ole Time Soda Fountain this weekend in Allerton. It is nice to have a fun nostalgic place to go to right down the street from the inn.

A couple days ago we celebrated the 4th of July. I moseyed on down to Corydon with Linda, Kay and Celeste to the Prairie Trails Museum of Wayne County to hear their guest speaker, Becky Bell-Greenstreet. She was sharing memories of her dad, Al Bell, who brought the far off places of the world to life for thousands of rural, Iowan, school kids from 1949-1979. I think Celeste was wishing she could have seen one of his assemblies, and Kay and Linda were wishing they had grown up here too.

Well, as Mr. Bell would say, "This is a grrreeeeaaat day!" And with that I am on my way to the Square.

May your catnaps be long and fanciful & your catnip strong!

Full House

Thomas Beckett here, your on-the-prowl ghost cat. You learn a lot of lessons at the Inn of the Six-Toed cat in Allerton. Celeste learned a valuable one a few moments ago....always know how old the cake you're cutting into and eating is – a month old, not so good. Talk about hacking up a hairball! That was the funniest thing I have seen in 50 years!

Speaking of 50 years, my people hosted a 50 year class reunion of the ACL Eagles class of 1966 (Allerton, Clio, Lineville). Everyone had a wonderful time. If I may brag, my girls (Celeste and Kay) put out a delicious spread. Judging from the plates, the humans thought the food good too. No scraps for my fellow live cats. Kay made a very tasty colorful pasta salad, that really stood out and Celeste tried a couple new desserts. A great bunch this class of '66, a very friendly & lively group. It is always nice to see people enjoying the Inn. All-and-all it was a total success, and a beautiful day to meet with old school friends.

Rock on Class of '66! It was wonderful having you visit our inn. We would love to have you back anytime.

Until next Cat's Comments....May your catnaps be long and fanciful & your catnip strong!

Queer Things the Cat Sees and Hears Continued....

As I stated in the Cat's Comments from May 27th, queer things can happen here at the Inn of the Six-Toed Cat...hold on, I need a good stretch before I get started....Ahhhhh. Now, where was I, yes, queer things....

During this past hunting season, the head guide, Perry, was talking on the phone and looking out the window onto Central Ave. when I playfully grabbed the blind and pulled it down. You should have seen his eyes bug out. You would have thought he saw a ghost! I had been doing this for two weeks, but he was the first to see me at it. I have been on my best behavior since. But really, I am a cat, I can't resist objects that dangle.

The other day I heard a very interesting tale told to Celeste by a guest who literally grew up at the inn. During ole Finley's time (It was Mr. Finley who restored the inn), her mom worked as the cook. Upstairs, at the end of the hall, was a rocking chair by what is now the Rosalie room. One evening she heard the a creaking, like someone rocking, coming from upstairs. She started up the stairs, and just as she could see all the way down the hall she stopped. There, rocking gently in the chair was a woman aglow in a blue dress. Naturally, she did not go any further and came right back downstairs.

I almost forgot. One of our most recent guests was up very late in her room, her husband sleeping soundly next to her. All-of-a-sudden she heard "hey." "Just like someone was greeting you," The guest said. "So, I said 'hey' back."

Do you have a story of my Inn that you would like to tell? Just email my people and I will add it on an upcoming Cat's Comments under the title of Queer Things The Cat (me) Sees and Hears.

In the meantime come pay us a visit here in Allerton. We have wonderful packages for people who just want to get away.

Until my next comments,

May your catnaps be long and fanciful & your catnip strong!

Big Bikes on the Square

Your friendly ghost cat on the prowl here. The other day I was roaming around some of the local towns here in southern Iowa. There was quite the activity on the square in Centerville. Lot's of noisy bikes, music and food. I was able to find some good scraps....sigh....sometimes, I forget I can't eat.

From May through August the last Friday of each month Centerville hosts Friday Night Thunder Bike Nights. All are welcome and like I said there is live music, food and fun things for adults and kids alike. You don't have to own a motorcycle to come out and there is no charge for the event.

The Inn of the Six-Toed Cat in Allerton, IA, is only about 30 minutes away from the square in Centerville. Bring your bike or just yourself, come stay with me for the weekend and enjoy Bike Night on the square.

Sorry, but I have to get back to sunning myself.

Until my next comments,

Another Great Southern Iowa Day

It is another cat-tacular day at the Inn of the Six-toed Cat and your on-the-prowl, friendly, ghost cat is sunning himself in the grass.

The countryside here in southern Iowa is absolutely picturesque this time of year. Lush and brilliant green, it is the perfect blend of artifice and nature that you could hope to see, with peaceful little farms and lazy historic towns dotting the Iowa landscape. It all calls for a day on the lake at Bob White Park and a chocolate malt at the Olde Time Soda Fountain on the main street here in Allerton.

But thanks to one of my people, my idyllic day and catnap has been disturbed. Checking to see what all the commotion is about, I find Celeste arm deep in mortar making, to my mind, a complete mess. Apparently, a leak in the shower of the Settler's bathroom means a complete redesign of the bathroom is in order.

I like the new look. Celeste calls it modern country or cowboy chic, but I think she is just being a bit on the pretentious  side. Of course, I had to mark the new room as mine. It's what we cats do by rubbing ourselves along an object. This is a little difficult for a ghost cat as I tend to go right through the walls.

Before I get back to my catnap I want to invite you to visit me here at the inn. Our No Worries get-a-way package (click here to see package details) is perfect for these lazy days of summer. Book It Now and tell Kay and Celeste I sent you. Don't forget to put the name of the package in the subject line.

Queer Things the Cat Sees and Hears

Let me introduce myself, I am Thomas Beckett "THE ghost cat" of the Inn of the Six-Toed Cat. And, yes, I am that six-toed cat that the inn is named for. I have been haunting this bed & breakfast ever since the last of my nine lives was surrendered.

Being a ghost cat, I see many strange things while on the prowl looking after the inn. My inn has been here in Allerton, IA since 1909, so naturally there are some interesting happenings to tell.

The first tale is the mysterious disappearance of the dish soap from its regular place in a virtually empty sink. Both Kay and Celeste (my people) looked for it thoroughly, only to have it reappear about seven minutes later in its right spot. All Celeste said was, "That's really weird!"

Sometimes I can't help but play little tricks on them, like a few weeks ago when Celeste was up late baking. I jumped up and rang the bell on the front door. Don't they know things like that are cat toys? My fun, however, was cut short by that pest of a dog of hers, Missy Mouse. She saw me and started her usual barking. This in turn ended up making Celeste quite on edge as she checked the main level and didn't see anyone. I tried to let her know it was just me, but she can't see me and I ended up having to go outside just so that stupid little mutt would be quite.

Another time she heard one of our past guests walking around up stairs late at night. I do my part to keep things lively by knocking things off counters, but it is all in good fun.

If you have some great tales about our inn please feel free to email us. I know my people would just love to here them, and i will share them in a forthcoming Cat's Comments....Oh drat! Here comes that dumb dog! I'm out of here!

To be continued.......
